As you know, there are an unlimited amount of ideas and designs to sandblast into rocks. One of my favorite projects is to carve into garden rocks with inspirational quotes. It adds a great decorative item and embeds a meaningful quote to the person who will receive the rock.
The rock shown in the picture is a recent project engraved with a quote by Napoleon Hill: “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
Where to Find Inspirational Quotes
There are many sites you can find online that provide hundreds of great quotes that people may enjoy and purchase if you engraved a rock with them. Search for terms such as:
- Inspirational Quotes
- Positive Quotes
- or Motivational Quotes
Ways to Spice Up Your Rock Engraved Quote
- Add a Design Next to the Quote– My favorite way to spice up a rock with quote is to add a design element with it. Choose a design that fits the quote.
- Use Word Art– by simply organizing the words of the quote in different text sizes in a certain design, it can dramatically improve the looks so it doesn’t look as boring. In my example above, it has all the main keywords of the quote in a larger font size.
I am putting together Module 2 inside the training area now that will talk about using design software, an abundant selection of my secret resources to get great designs to use for rock blasting, free software that will automatically organize your word art and much more.
You can sign up for the training area here and you will receive Module 2 when it becomes available.

I want to sandblast hard shell gourds. We have sand and glass beads to no avail. Didn’t break through the outer skin. Any suggestions
@Judy, what grit are you using? I would think using a courser grit and/or turn up the pressure should do it but I have never sandblasted gourds.
we used 80 grit. I know that somehow this can be done, since I’ve seen it on a gourd. We have used sand and glass balls. The skin on gourds are very hard.
I don’t think glass beads work for any type of carving but the sand should have worked. A harder abrasive like aluminum oxide should definitely be able to but I am not very familiar with gourd carving. Sounds interesting. I might be able to test with my aluminum oxide to see if it works prior to having you purchase it. Do you purchase hard gourds at a craft store or somewhere else?
Thanks
I buy them from a gourd farm. http://www.wuertzfarm.com
HI
I AM JIGNESH PATEL
What is difference Between copper slag and sand?
which is best and permitted for environment and health purpose?
@Jignesh, regular silica sand should not be used because it is a health risk as discussed here: https://www.sandblasterinfo.com/term-sandblasting-not-used/
I am not too familiar with copper slag, but I see that it is used as a blasting abrasive so that should be safe for both.
I am having a hard time blasting small images on stones. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Do you use a stencil for your small rocks or mat?
